Loneliness, is the headline emotion of the new album from Mike Nisbet, The Unbearable Silence Of God. The artists 5th album reaches out in the night and holds the listener close, whispers in their ear that it’s going to be alright, but then again it might already have all gone wrong.
9 painstakingly crafted songs span an intimate and confessional 46 minutes, written, performed and produced by Nisbet, it becomes a world to fall into and discovered an expansive emotional world within, ultimately the songs want to let the listener know they’re not alone in their loneliness.
Lead single Ugly Baby runs ahead of you, searching with is hypnotic guitar and solid simple drum, asking the listener to throw themselves in. Despite the pains and strife, what else can save you but love?
‘Let’s recall the hard times in our bones / sing the good times from our eyes / come cuddle in my coat’. The high tempo energetic Secret Sun welcomes the destruction of delusion, dancing in the ruin and riding the cracks of light. ‘Swallowed whole by the ballroom, chemical love in full boom, it was pristine Lorelei, I’ve been wrong, and so have you’. While an absolute linchpin of the album Real Out & Touch You is an unapologetic hand out into the night hoping someone will be there… ‘We were resplendent like summer / high sun on blue seas / held on tight didn’t we dear / but loves poetry brought is to our knees’.
From first to last second the listener is taken on an emption journey, left turns, harsh lights throwing into relief the rollercoaster that can be our heart and loneliness. Hopefully by the end you’ll feel lifted, and maybe see the sun coming up.
Hailing from Scotland’s rugged west coast, Mike Nisbet has been writing and performing for over 16 years. Transforming from a pop-punk teen to a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and celebrated singer-songwriter. Influenced by the likes of Tom Waits, Randy Newman, and Nick Cave, his music blends dark, vivid storytelling with a contemporary edge. His vocal-led performances on guitar and piano conjure the emotional intensity of a Tom Waits barroom ballad, while drawing inspiration form more future looking sounds to create a contemporary take on the ‘singer-songwriter’.
Constantly working on new material, Nisbet has released 5 E.P’s, and 4 albums since 2011, with works ranging from acoustic ballads on 2011’s full length VAGRANT and disintegrating electric landscaped that close out 2023’s GET DEAD. The search for new sounds to help tell stories of life are always evolving in the sonic pallet. Nisbet’s 2023 album GET DEAD further solidified his reputation, exploring themes of mortality with bold, introspective songwriting. The album highlights his prowess as a multi-instrumentalist and storyteller, inviting listeners to reflect on life’s inevitable end.
